Nepali Sahitya Parishad, Assam (NSPA), one of the premier literary organizations of the Nepali-speaking Gorkha community of Assam, was founded on January 4, 1984. Another important literary body known as Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha (ANSS) came into existence on August 19, 1993. For many years, both organizations functioned independently, contributing significantly to the development and promotion of Nepali language, literature, and culture in Assam.

In keeping with long-term vision and responding to the collective aspirations of the people, these two literary bodies were brought under a single organizational umbrella at a historic joint convention held at Amilighat in Morigaon district, Assam, in May 2013. By a unanimous resolution, the name Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha (ANSS) was adopted as the official name of the unified organization. At the same time, January 4, 1984, the foundation date of the Nepali Sahitya Parishad, Assam, was formally recognized as the foundation day of the unified ANSS.

A new organizational logo was designed by creatively integrating the distinctive symbols and features of both earlier bodies. During the same convention, Dambal Dahal and Dr. Chinta Mani Sharma were unanimously elected as the first President and General Secretary, respectively, of the amalgamated Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha.

Since then, January 4 has been observed annually as the Foundation Day of ANSS, while August 19 is commemorated as Sahitya Divas. Reckoning its inception from 1984, the organization completed fifty years of its existence and celebrated its Golden Jubilee through year-long programmes. The celebrations culminated in a four-day grand concluding event and the 16th Triennial Conference, held at Sarupathar in Golaghat district, Assam, from December 5 to 8, 2024.

Today, the Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha stands not only as the apex literary body of the Gorkhas of Assam but also as a leading literary organization representing the Gorkha community across the northeastern region of India. It continues to work tirelessly for the all-round development of Nepali language, literature, art, culture, and education in Assam. The organization operates through a strong three-tier structural framework—central, district, and branch committees—and has consistently functioned in harmony with other ethnic and literary organizations since its inception.
